Correlation between BMD and Radio intensity of Human Bones for Strength Evaluation

چکیده
Bone mineral density [BMD] generally correlates with bone strength. BMD testing is used to assess bone density and diagnose osteoporosis. The HU scale is a linear transformation of the original linear attenuation coefficient measurement in to one in which the radio-density of distilled water at standard pressure and temperature is defined as Zero Hounsfield Unit while the radio-density of air at STP is defined -1000HU. The correlation between CT numbers and mechanical property estimated from cortical bone were found to be low (r2<0.2) and cancellous bone were found to be higher (r2>0.6). The specific relationship depending on the types of bone, that predict elastic module from density and CT numbers were suggested for human cortical and cancellous bone. CT numbers of HU measures X-ray linear attenuation of tissue inside the voxel.

Relationship between bone strength and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry measurements in pigs.
Computed tomography and a 3-point bending test were performed on the metacarpal bones of adult production pigs to test the hypothesis that bone strength is strongly correlated with areal bone mineral density (BMD) in this population. The aim of the study was to subject material from adult production pigs grouped by BMD to 3-point bending, to test this hypothesis and determine any correlations. ...
متن کاملExperimental investigation of bone mineral density in Thoroughbreds using quantitative computed tomography
Bone mineral density (BMD) is one of the indications of the strength and health. BMD measured by quantitative computed tomography (QCT) was compared with that measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and radiographic bone aluminum equivalence (RBAE). Limbs were removed from horses that had been euthanized for reasons not associated with this study. Sixteen limbs (left and right metaca...
متن کاملBone mineral density (BMD) and computer tomographic measurements of the equine proximal phalanx in correlation with breaking strength.
Despite the fact that bone mineral density (BMD) is an important fracture risk predictor in human medicine, studies in equine orthopedic research are still lacking. We hypothesized that BMD correlates with bone failure and fatigue fractures of this bone. Thus, the objectives of this study were to measure the structural and mechanical properties of the proximal phalanx with dual energy X-ray abs...
متن کاملEvaluation of bone strength: correlation between measurements of bone mineral density and drilling force.
Bone drilling is a major part of modern orthopaedic surgery which involves the internal fixation of fractured bones. The investigation of bone drilling described in this paper demonstrates the contribution of automation technology towards the study of bone strength. The aim of this preliminary investigation is to establish a relationship between bone drilling forces and measurements of bone min...
متن کاملBone Mineral Density in β Thalassemia Major and Intermedia, Correlation with Biochemical and Hormonal Profiles
Background: Expansion of bone marrow cavity and decreased cortical and trabecular bone tissues and osteoporosis are resulted from beta-thalassemia. The aim of this study was to assess bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with β thalassemia major and intermedia, and to determine their biochemical and hormonal profiles that may affect BMD. Materials and Methods: In a cross sectional study from ...
